Michael is the son of fiber artist Ellen D. West and the grandson of painter Henri Lambert DuSSold. His mother taught art and humanities for thirty years which gave him an appreciation for the arts. Growing up in a household surrounded by art, and visited by different artists exposed him to both three dimensional and two dimensional art forms. Michael began working in the studio of sculptor Ralph Hurst when he was a teenager. He learned all aspects of working with stone. He met sculptor Charles Hook at Florida State University where he learned metal casting, fabrication and design. Michael has used his knowledge to expand into wood and mixed media as well as wall reliefs. Michael resides in Florida where he has a working studio. His current influences are Camille Claudel, August Rodin, Donald De Lue and Ian Norbury.
